Taking Up Comedy
Comedy has been something I’ve always had an interest in, from watching Netflix specials to scrolling on YouTube to see new comedians with new jokes and styles. I never really knew how to get into it though, mostly because all of the jokes I’d tell would just come in conversation with friends and family. I like to think I’m a funny person, but that may just be because I spend all day with myself (hope that made you laugh). I did once get a “Bad Jokes Incoming” mug from one of my friends for my birthday, so hopefully that speaks to my comedic nature and talents. Anyways, I decided to try and take up comedy for fun.
I took a few online beginner classes over the past 2 months or so, and I’ve been working with a coach to learn more about different styles. The end product of these classes was a set that I’m excited (and nervous, of course) to be able to present at a club in SF in a couple weeks time.
Comedy has been great to learn, but more than that it has really pushed me out of my comfort zone. The first thing that was really different was trying to come up with my own experiences that I thought were funny that would make other people laugh, and that took a while. I also practiced crowd work with my teacher, and it has made me so appreciative of comedians who can do it on the daily. The most nerve-wracking thing, however, is presenting. When I wrote the jokes, I thought they were funny, but you don’t know if someone else is going to find them funny until you present your material. That’s what I’ll get to know in about 2 weeks.
I’ll definitely share the video of me presenting in a later blog post, but that’s it for this one! Thank you so much for reading and catch you in the next one!
